Lucas Moura came to Tottenham’s rescue with a late equaliser to secure a dramatic 1-1 draw at Barcelona which sent them through to the Champions League last 16 at the expense of Inter.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men needed to at least match Inter’s result at home to PSV and they looked to be heading into the Europa League, but Lucas struck five minutes from time to turn the situation on its head and send Spurs through as Group B’s other match also ended 1-1.
In a week which he has been accused of turning up late to training, Ousmane Dembele seemed switched on earlier than anyone else with his seventh-minute opener. The French midfielder picked up possession on the half-way line and used his express pace to glide past the Spurs defence before slotting past Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal.
The side from North London gradually grew into the game with Heung-min Son going close twice before Phillipe Coutinho hit the bar for Barca just before the break.
Spurs came out fighting in the second half and crafted a host of chances with Harry Kane, Moura denied by Jasper Cillessen.
Potchettino’s team looked the more likely to score but it was the hosts who went close to doubling their lead with eight minutes to play as Coutinho hit the frame for a second time.
Just when it looked as though Spurs were never going to find a way past Cillessen, Kane set up Moura expertly leaving the Brazilian with a tap-in.
1-1 the final score as Spurs go through after Inter Milan failed to beat PSV.
