Chelsea win inaugural Premier League Summer Series

Chelsea football club are the inaugural winners of the Premier League’s preseason tournament in the United States, the Premier League Summer Series.

Six teams took part in the competition with Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton, Fulham and Newcastle joining the Blues.  The tournament consisted of three rounds of fixtures with the side with the best record becoming champions.

In the first round Chelsea and Brighton kicked off the competition with a seven-goal thriller with both sides giving the fans an entertaining match to remember.  Chelsea came away winners with a final result of 4-3.  Fulham’s 3-2 win over Brentford continued the high scoring trend of the first round while Newcastle and Aston Villa closed the day off with another goal fest, sharing the spoils in a 3-3 draw.

The second round was unable to match the goalscoring figures of the first, with the six teams scoring 13 less goals across the three fixtures.  Chelsea and Newcastle were unable to replicate their goalscoring numbers from the previous round, ending in a 1-1 draw.  Brighton secured their first win of the competition after beating Brentford by two goals to nil while Villa managed a victory over Fulham by the same score of 2-0.

The third and final round would decide the winners of the competition with Chelsea and Aston Villa both on equal points.  Newcastle secured a 2-1 win over Brighton, while Aston Villa stumbled against Brentford, drawing 3-3 opening the door for Chelsea who secured their position at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Fulham.

Chelsea finished in first place on seven points with Aston Villa and Newcastle in second and third place with both on five points.  Villa finished second on goal difference.  Brighton settled in fourth place ahead of fifth place Fulham on goal difference with Brentford sitting bottom table managing just a single point from a possible nine.

Chelsea’s new 35-million-pound signing Nicolas Jackson won player of the tournament with the striker scoring two goals and providing two assists in three appearances.  Newcastle’s Elliot Anderson was the top scorer netting three goals while Aston Villa’s Brazilian midfielder Douglas Ruiz was the best creator providing three assists throughout the competition.
