Kudus’ high price tag limits transfer options

West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus is poised for an end of season exit, but his unrealistic release clause will complicate any potential move, writes DYLAN JOHNSON.

West Ham United’s Ghanaian forward Mohammed Kudus is expected to leave the club at the conclusion of the 2024-25 Premier League season, with multiple Premier League clubs expressing interest. However, his hefty release clause may limit his options despite his talent and unique footballing profile.

Reports indicate that West Ham are close to reaching their Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limit, meaning a significant sale is necessary to balance the books. The club’s financial strain follows an underwhelming transfer window under former manager Julen Lopetegui, leaving new boss Graham Potter with little room to maneuver in the market unless a major player is sold.

Kudus, 24, is widely regarded as West Ham’s most valuable asset, and interest in the attacker is high. Aston Villa, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United have all been linked with the Ghanaian, recognizing his rare profile as a left-footed right-winger with proven Premier League experience.

His contract includes a release clause exceeding €85 million, which will become active at the end of the current season. While his ability is and potential are significant, the high valuation will complicate a transfer, as Premier League clubs must navigate PSR restrictions when structuring big-money moves.

If West Ham decide to cash in on Kudus, they may have to accept an offer below his release clause. The market for wingers of his caliber is thin which does benefit West Ham’s bargaining position, but Kudus’ inconsistent performances in the current campaign and a financial landscape where Premier League teams must be cautious with spending, few clubs would be willing to meet such a steep fee outright.

Another potential destination for Kudus is the Saudi Pro League, where clubs like Al Nassr and Al Hilal have the financial muscle to approach West Ham’s asking price. However, even in Saudi Arabia, his valuation could be seen as excessive, especially with several marquee attackers potentially on the market. With the likes of Mohamed Salah, Luis Díaz, and Darwin Núñez rumored to be available from Liverpool alone, clubs may prioritize more high-profile signings over Kudus.

Since his arrival from Ajax in 2023 for approximately €40 million, Kudus has delivered several moments of brilliance for West Ham, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists. While those numbers aren’t groundbreaking, his electrifying dribbling, vision, and creativity suggest that he could thrive in a more stable and competitive environment. If he finds the right club, surrounded by higher-quality players, Kudus has the potential to reach even greater heights in his career.

Mohammed Kudus is clearly ready for a bigger challenge, but his release clause will hold things up. With plenty of interest from top clubs in Europe, if West Ham are willing to lower their asking price, Kudus could move to a top team at the end of the season and showcase his potential at an even higher level.
