Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango feels something more than just clean sheets should decide the Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season.
The 32-year-old is currently second on the clean sheet charts with 12 while Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune has the most clean sweeps with a total of 16.
Onyango believes Khune is favorite to win the covenant award, but feels more than clean sheets should decide the winner.
“I don’t know the procedure they follow, but if it’s about clean sheets, then Khune wins it hands down,” Onyango told KickOff.com.
“He has done fantastic for the team, but if you look at how you’ve helped the team achieve, I think they would look at different individuals. There’s me, there’s [Richard] Ofori who has done well for Maritzburg and there’s also Sage Stephens who has done well for Cape Town City. I think he has 11 or 12 clean sheets.
“A lot of things have to be looked at, not at only clean sheets. You need to look at how you helped the team achieve and that will be done by the committee. But at the moment I think Itu has done well and not to disregard the other guys. For me, whichever way it goes it will be fine with me.”
Mamelodi Sundowns will take on Bloemfontein Celtic in their final Absa Premiership encounter at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off set for 15:00.
