Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lucky Mohomi has vowed to stay and fight for a place in the starting XI at the Brazilians next season.
Mohomi spent a large part of the past campaign, his second season at Sundowns, on the sidelines nursing a knee injury. He made his comeback in January but still had to spend some time getting back his match fitness.
As a result, he missed the run-in and was forced to watch from the bench as Hlompho Kekana and Tiyani Mabunda formed a solid central-midfield partnership, with Oupa Manyisa becoming the preferred rotation option.
With Sundowns in the hunt for another midfielder in Andile Jali, a spot in the team may just become even harder to come by in the Chloorkop outfit next season.
Mohomi, a former Free State Stars player, made just two appearances in his second season with Sundowns, after featuring 20 times in all competitions in his first campaign with the side.
‘I told myself that the first season was about learning and understanding what happens at Sundowns. In the second season I hoped I would play more, but unfortunately, due to injuries, I did not manage to do that. On top of that, we beefed up the squad, bringing in the likes of Oupa, guys who I have been watching and I admire,’ Mohomi told KickOff.com.
‘The injury set me back. I only started training with the team in January this year, so I had to catch up. The guys were performing well and you can’t just change them. I know my time will come and I will surely have to do the job.
‘I can’t always be sitting on the bench watching others play. They also have to watch me. As much as I am learning from them, I have to showcase what I have. In the coming season I have to work harder, do extra training, stay healthy and do everything so that I can be able to play,’ he concluded.
