Mamelodi Sundowns forward Percy Tau walked away with three awards and R462, 000 richer, while coach Pitso Mosimane was named Coach of the Season at the Premier Soccer League Awards on Tuesday evening, writes DEAN WORKMAN.
The mercurial forward led his team to the Absa Premiership crown by scoring a league-high 11 goals, while also amassing an impressive 15 assists. The Bafana Bafana striker also won the Players’ Player of the Season and was honoured as the league’s top goalscorer.
Tau fought off competition from his teammate Hlompho Kekana and Siphesihle Ndlovu of Maritzburg United for the Footballer of the Season award while also beating Musa Nyatama of Orlando Pirates and Ndlovu to the Players’ Player of the Season award.
Mosimane was the man behind a record eighth PSL title at Downs and pipped two worthy candidates in Milutin Sredojevic and Fadlu Davids. Micho led his Orlando Pirates to a second-place finish, improving on an 11th-place finish from the season before, while Davids led the Team of Choice to a best-ever fourth-place finish and the final of the Nedbank Cup.
Mosimane, however, was a worthy winner considering the tough schedule which he managed to navigate as the Brazilians did battle on a number of fronts, including challenging in the Caf Champions League.
Tau walked away with R250,000 for the Footballer of the Season and R200,000 for the Players’ Player of the Season, while Mosimane was awarded R75,000.
