Bafana Bafana have confirmed that Mandla Masango and Lebogang Phiri have withdrawn from the squad for the upcoming Cosafa Cup after they were not released by their respective clubs.
The national team coach Stuart Baxter has now called on Stellenbosch midfielder Jamie Webber to replace Masango, while bringing in Maritzburg United forward Mohau Mokate to take Phiri’s place in the squad.
Despite Phiri’s absence in the squad, Bafana Bafana still have three overseas-based players, which include Real Massama midfielder Thabo Cele, Sporting CP B striker Liam Jordan and AE Larisa midfielder Lehlogonolo Masalesa.
South Africa will join the competition in the quarter-finals, where they will take on the winner of Group A at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on 2 July 2017, with kick-off set for 17:00.
The likes of Tanzania, Malawi, Mauritius and Angola are all placed in Group A, and stand a chance to place Bafana Bafana in the last eight.
Baxter will join the squad in camp on 26 June 2017 after leading Supersport United to a 4-1 triumph over Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final played on Saturday.
Bafana Bafana are now set to face Platinum Stars in a practice match on Monday as part of their preparations for the upcoming Cosafa Cup competition.
