Kaizer Chiefs cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Elgeco Plus in the first round of the Caf Confederation Cup first leg on Saturday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
The Glamour Boys came into their third Caf Confederation Cup match against Elgeco Plus on the back of a 1-0 win over SuperSport United in the Absa Premiership.
Amakhosi have already played 22 games this season, winning eight, losing seven and drawing seven.
The Soweto giants have scored five goals and conceded two in their first two matches of the competition.
The Glamour Boys got off to a bright start and nearly opened the scoring after Mario Booysen latched on to a ball in the box before firing his volley towards goal, but the Elgeco shot-stopper did well to save his effort.
Khama Billiat should have handed Amakhosi the lead in the 16th minute after making his way into the area, but the forward was unable to find the net with the keeper well beaten.
Amakhosi dominated proceedings as the game went on, while the visitors were forced to hit Chiefs on the counter.
However, Chiefs eventually broke the deadlock after 32 minutes when Philani Zulu blasted his effort into the roof of the net, 1-0.
Ernst Middendorp’s men pushed forward in the closing stages of the first half as they went into the break with a 1-0 lead over Elgeco.
The home side came out with more intent in the second half but were struggling to create clear cut chances at goal.
Zulu nearly double his sides lead in the 74th minute, but the Elgeco keeper did well to keep out his half-volley from inside the area.
The Glamour Boys pressed forward in the last 10 minutes of the game as they looked to extend their advantage even further.
However, they were rewarded in the 86th minute when Leonardo Castro curled his effort into net after picking up a ball by Billiat to make it 2-0.
Castro then extended Chiefs’ lead even further in stoppage time when he slotted home from the spot-kick after Dumisani Zuma was brought down inside the box.
Amakhosi managed to hold on to their 3-0 lead into the final whistle to take a healthy lead into the second leg next week.
