Absa Premiership Young Player of The Year Phakamani Mahlambi will jet off to Portugal to undergo a three-week trial, according to Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt.
Mahlambi proved influential in Wits’ maiden title triumph despite making limited appearances following a knee injury. The U20 international chipped in with six goals and six assists in just eight starts and has landed himself a trial in Europe, reportedly with Vitoria Guimaraes or Sporting Lisbon.
Hunt confirmed that the 19-year-old will be under assessment for a three-week trial ahead of the new campaign.
‘He’s going oversees this week – to Portugal,’ he told kickoff.
‘They’ll have a look at him there and let him train for about three weeks, which is good.
‘It’s before the start of the season but hopefully, please God, he makes it,’ he added.
Mahlambi has spent almost three years under the guidance of the former SuperSport United mentor and Hunt is adamant that Mahlambi can be a world-beater.
‘He’s a good fun-loving boy, I just think he still needs a lot of guidance.
‘He’s raw but he’s got huge and exciting ability, and if he can harness that ability and get into the right environment I think his potential is endless,” added the newly crowned Absa Premiership Coach of the Season.
‘He didn’t play the first round of the season for us, which was a blow. He came in the second round, started off well and then faded a little bit but he’s a young boy man, you know, he needs time.”
The former School Of Excellence man made his Bafana Bafana debut in an international friendly against Angola in March earlier this year.
