Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies made history on Friday evening as they became the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League winners after defeating Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana 2-0 in the final on Friday evening.
The Brazilians came into the game full of confidence following their impressive displays in the group stages, which was followed up by a clutch performance in the semi-finals.
The South Africans started on the front foot and loo to take the game to Hasaacas Ladies as they struck the cross bar in 15th minute from a set-piece and then moments later Lerato Kgasago’s went close with a dipping strike that sailed just over the crossbar.
The Ghanaian opponents, however, were not going to just sit back and threatened the Sundowns box with Rahama Jafaru going down from a challenge inside the box in the 24th minute, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewing the incident but did not spot any infringement.
Bafana ba Style eventually grabbed the opener in the 33rd minute from a slick attacking move, as Mgcoyi went through on goal on the right side of the box and played a square pass that was tapped home by Chuene Morifi at the far post.
Hasaacas had a glorious chance just before the hour-mark after as Letona Daweti went through one-on-one with goalkeeper Grace Buoadu but she miscued her lobbed effort.
Mgcoyi eventually doubled the lead for Banyana Ba Style in the 65th minute with a composed strike past Buoadu after being slipped clean through on goal after a delightful through ball from Nonhlanhla Mthandi.
Hasaacas had a chance to pull a goal back in the last 12 minutes from a free-kick just outside the box but Perpetual Agyekum saw her free-kick palmed over the crossbar by Sundowns shot-stopper Andile Dlamini.
Sundowns Ladies may have received a red card with Regina Mogolola, who had just come on, was sent off after for a lunging tackle following a VAR review, but Banyana Ba Style were out sight and managed to hold on and become African champions.
