Catch up with this past Sunday’s action at the Africa Cup of Nations as Equatorial Guinea inflicted a first defeat in 36 games on Algeria to leave the reigning champions in serious danger of a group-stage exit after an astonishing goalkeeping blunder cost the Ivory Coast victory over Sierra Leone.
Algeria 0-1 Equatorial Guinea
Reigning champions Algeria are in danger of an early exit from the Afcon after a shock 1-0 defeat by outsiders Equatorial Guinea in Douala on Sunday.
Esteban Obiang’s 70th-minute goal gave Equatorial Guinea the victory and brought Algeria’s 35-game unbeaten record to a crashing end.
Cote d’Ivoire 2-2 Sierra Leone
Alhaji Kamara bundled the ball into the net following an astonishing goalkeeping blunder in injury time to give Sierra Leone a shock 2-2 draw with Ivory Coast in Douala on Sunday.
Badra Ali Sangare tried to catch a ball headed back to him by a teammate in the third added minute in an attempt to prevent a corner, only to drop it into the path of Steven Caulker who squared for substitute Kamara to score.
It was a remarkable moment and one that prevented Ivory Coast from wrapping up qualification for the last 16 there and then.
Tunisia 4-0 Mauritania
Former Premier League forward Wahbi Khazri scored twice as Tunisia recovered from a controversial loss to Mali by hammering Mauritania 4-0 in Limbe on Sunday.
The match-day two result threw Group F wide open with Gambia and Mali on four points, after a 1-1 draw between them earlier, and Tunisia on three with one match day to come.
Gambia 1-1 Mali
Musa Barrow converted a 90th-minute penalty for Gambia to snatch a 1-1 draw with Mali with the match-day two results set to take both teams through to the second round of the Afcon.
Mali went ahead after 79 minutes in Limbe when Ibrahima Kone scored from another penalty, both of which were awarded after the Moroccan referee watched VAR replays.
The draw keeps Gambia and Mali level at the top of Group F with four points each. Pointless sides Tunisia and Mauritania met later on Sunday and a win for either country would bring them into contention.
