United opened the scoring in the ninth minute after Bruno Fernandes volleyed home Anthony Elanga’s cut-back to bag his 50th career goal for the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo then doubled his side’s lead from the penalty spot following a VAR review, before Raphael Varane added a third with a deflected shot 18 minutes from time with his first Premier League goal for United.

Ralf Rangnick’s side now remain in sixth place on 58 points, three behind Tottenham Hotspur in fifth spot having played two matches more, while Brentford stays 14th with 40 points, eight clear of the bottom three.
