After missing numerous chances over the ninety minutes, Orlando Pirates failed to win the Caf Confederation Cup as RS Berkan edged the Soweto giants via a penalty shoot-out.
The Buccaneers made one change from the side that narrowly lost the semi-final second-leg against Al Ahli Tripoli, with Kabelo Dlamini coming into the starting lineup for Abel Mabaso.
The South African side got off to a strong start as they created a big opening with just four minutes on the clock but Deon Hotto fired a tame effort at Hamza Hamiani after being slipped through by Dlamini.
The Moroccans were happy to sit back and absorb the pressure with Mehdi Oubilla’s half-volley from the edge of the box, which flashed just wide, their only chance of note.
Pirates on the other hand looked more threatening and had another opening just after the half-hour mark as Bandile Shandu’s effort at goal was kept out by Hamiani who did well to get down to keep the shot out.
The sides then exchanged chances on the brink of the break as first Hotto hit an effort over the crossbar with a free kick from the edge of the box before Richard Ofori had to keep out a threatening strike by Youssef El Fahli.
The Buccaneers continued to dominate after the restart and worked another close-range save off Akbi from another guilt-edge attempt by Hotto with the defence caught square.
A fresh pair of legs in the final third over 30 minutes in the second half for Pirates saw Tshegofatso Mabasa replace Kwame Peprah upront.
Pirates still found the going tough up top where the introduction of Mabasa brought no meaningful impact, and the match thus entered extra-time.
Things began to heat up in extra-time as Berkane were awarded a penalty after a VAR consultation just seven minute into the added period. Youssed El Fahli stepped up and made no mistake in firing his side in the lead.
Just as it looked Pirates had run out of ideas they managed to grab the equaliser with three minutes left to play as Thembinkhosi Lorch’s pass was missed by everybody and trickled into the bottom corner.
Although Lorch was the hero in extra-time, he was the only man to miss from the spot in the shoot-out as the Morocans secured their second consecutive title with the victory on penalties.
