South Africa has been blessed with quality strikers over the years – here’s your chance to decide which of these two Bafana Bafana forwards makes it into your ultimate team.

Benni McCarthy

The Cape Town-born striker is arguably one of the best players ever to grace the national team set-up and not only is he Bafana Bafana’s all- time top-scorer, but the only South African to win the Champions League title in 2004 with FC Porto under then coach Jose Mourinho.

During his playing career, McCarthy garnered a wealth of experience playing for the likes of Seven Stars, Cape Town Spurs, Ajax, Celta de Vigo, FC Porto, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Orlando Pirates, scoring 174 goals and assisting 31 goals from 468 appearances across all competitions.

On an international front, Benni netted a total of 31 goals in 80 appearances after debuting under then coach Clive Barker on 4 June 1997.

McCarthy’s trophy haul is just as impressive – with a total of 14 trophies playing in South Africa, Spain, Netherlands and Portugal, and most notably the Champions League, Eredivisie, Primeira Liga and the Absa Premiership titles.

Shaun Bartlett

Bartlett became one of South Africa’s most feared strikers and an icon of the game following his performance in the English Premier League playing for Charlton Athletic. He is most famously known for scoring a brace on his Premier League debut against United to seal a comeback 3-3 draw for Charlton Athletic in 2000 and for many more incredible moments.

The Bafana great also enjoyed spells in the USA, Switzerland and South Africa, where he managed to find the back of the net 129 times from 422 appearances playing for the likes of Cape Town Spurs, Colorado Rapids MetroStars, Cape Town Spurs, FC Zürich, Charlton Athletic, Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic.

However, Bartlett is better known for his exploits with the national team, having scored 28 goals in 74 appearances, while also helping the team win the famous 1996 Africa Cup National title.
