Mbappe places himself amongst the all-time greats

Kylian Mbappe has placed himself among the biggest names in World Cup history after a double against Poland took his world cup goal tally to nine goals in eleven appearances.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has taken control of the golden boot narrative, topping the list with five goals and two assists in four games in Qatar, however this isn’t the number making headlines.

Mbappe has now scored nine goals at World Cup competitions, equalling some of the greatest in football history like Argentina’s Lionel Messi, Portugal’s Eusebio, Spain’s David Villa and Italy’s Christian Vieri.

He has now also scored more World Cup goals than Diego Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of arguably the greatest players to have ever played the game, and Mbappe is still only two weeks shy of his 24th birthday.

To achieve such a feat with so much football ahead of him is truly exceptional, despite the controversy surrounding his future and the world class players around him in Qatar, Mbappe is the star that pulls the team together, he is the one that dictates the opposition’s gameplan.

The French will play England in the quarterfinals where the tournament’s top scoring side will look to Kyle Walker’s pace to lock down the near unstoppable threat that is Mbappe.

Has Mbappe got what it takes to drive the French to an unprecedented World Cup title defence? Or will the English bring football home and send Mbappe back to Paris empty handed?
