Everton have had a season filled with disappointment and desperation as they once again find themselves in a relegation battle. One player that has showed promise amongst an underperforming squad is Amadou Onana.
Sean Dyche took over his first Premier League game with Everton over the weekend, where they faced top of the table Arsenal, with all the signs pointing to another disappointing display for the Evertonians. Onana and co defied expectations, coming away with all three points, becoming just the second team to beat Arsenal in the league this season.
Onana gave arguably his best performance in an Everton shirt, bossing the midfield, and most importantly to the fans, showing a passion and hunger Everton have been lacking for years.
The Belgian was named man of the match in their victory over the Gunners and at just 21 years old, the young midfielder has a bright future ahead of him.
Onana may be lacking final product at this moment in time, providing only one goal and one assist so far in the Premier League this season, but this is more of a consequence of Everton’s struggles this season than Onana being incapable of providing offensively.
He makes up for this with great ability in possession, using his skillful dribbling ability to get out of tight situations and create space for his teammates. He is powerful on the ball but shows aggression on defence, never afraid to lunge into tackles and regain possession or chase the second ball.
The key for Sean Dyche’s success at Everton will not just be implementing a solid defensive foundation, but also getting the best out of players like Onana who have the potential to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

Amadou Onana. Everton. 2022-23.
I feel like it goes under the radar that this is a player who is still yet to play the equivalent of 50 professional league games yet.
There are obvious areas to improve understandably, but where Onana is good, he is *soooooo* good pic.twitter.com/tLBGRMWqqq
