Premier League matchday 24 – Five players to watch

Here are five players to watch out for this weekend as the Premier League begins matchday 24 of the 2022/23 season.

Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton and Hove Albion)

Kaoru Mitoma has been one of Brighton’s standout players so far this season.  The Japanese winger has been sensational on the wing, using his pace, trickery and football IQ to embarrass whoever is brave enough to try and defend him.  Mitoma joined Brighton from Kawasaki Frontale for three million Euros, another of Brighton’s scouting masterclasses.  Brighton take on an in-form Fulham this weekend and will need Mitoma at his best to make the difference.

Wilfried Gnonto (Leeds United)

Wilfried Gnonto is developing into a promising Premier League talent with the 19-year-old becoming Leeds United’s most threatening attacker.  The Italian teenager plays with passion and directness but also possesses composure and maturity few players his age can replicate.  Leeds United travel to fellow relegation fighters Everton.  Leeds are one point clear of relegation but if they fail to win this weekend, surviving relegation may become too big a job for them.

Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa)

Tyrone Mings missed Aston Villa’s defeat to Manchester City in the previous gameweek due to injury.  The England international has been key to Unai Emery’s successful start to Villa management with most of their points under Emery being won with Mings in the starting XI.  Aston Villa host title challengers Arsenal who will have a point to prove after their recent slump.  The Aston Villa captain faces a late fitness test before hosting the Gunners, with Emery hoping his star center back can bring solidity back to Villa Park.

Nick Pope (Newcastle United)

Nick Pope has been the most consistent goalkeeper in the Premier League over the past five seasons, going back to his time at Burnley.  Newcastle United have the best defense in the Premier League with Pope’s contributions between the posts season defining.  He has only conceded 13 goals in 23 appearances so far this season while also managing to keep 12 cleansheets.  Newcastle host Liverpool, with the Reds looking to start a run of good form, Pope will need to be at his best to stop Darwin Nunez, Mohammed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

Marcus Rashford is arguably the most in-form player in Europe since the end of the World Cup.  Rashford’s goal against Barcelona in the UEFA Europa League took his overall season tally to 30 goal contributions in 35 appearances.  Manchester United host Leicester City at Old Trafford with the Foxes still soaring after their 4-1 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur last week.  Erik Ten Hag will need Rashford to keep the momentum against Leicester  as they continue to fight for four trophies this season.
