Premier League team of the week – Gameweek 3

Take a look at SoccerMag’s best 11 performers from Gameweek 2 of the Premier League, featuring a surprise South African inclusion.

Gameweek 3 of the Premier League was a classic as West Ham United Stunned Brighton 3-1, while Liverpool silenced St James’ Park with a historical comeback.

We used buildlineup.com to put our team onto paper, but our selections are explained below.
Goalkeeper
Alisson – Liverpool
Few would argue with Alisson’s inclusion after his performance in Liverpool’s shock win over Newcastle. The Brazilian made one of the saves of the season when pushing Almiron’s volley onto to the cross bar. Alisson arguably won Liverpool the game.

Defenders
Willy Boly – Nottingham Forest
Boly was immense against Manchester United despite Forest’s defeat. The 32-year-old scored Forest’s second goal in the fourth minute. United had to work for every opportunity they had and Boly was central to their struggles in front of goal.

Matty Cash – Aston Villa
Cash was sensational in Aston Villa’s victory over Burnley. The Polish international scored his first ever brace and will be hoping his team officially bounced back from their first day demolition.

Joachim Andersen – Crystal Palace
Andersen is one of the best defenders in the Premier League this season, and it is no surprise Crystal Palace have been so difficult to breakdown with the Dane dominating from the back. He scored a late equaliser for Palace, providing a top-tier performance on both ends of the pitch.

Midfielders
Joao Palhinha – Fulham
Palhinha is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League and his performance against Arsenal was the latest example of his quality. His work rate in the middle of the park was crucial in breaking up the Gunners’ offence and his late goal secured the draw for the Cottagers.

Rodri – Manchester City
Rodri has become arguably Manchester City’s most important player. The Spaniard has a clutch gene worth 100 million by itself. His 88th-minute winner can be added to his collection of important City goals alongside his finish in the Champions League final.

James Ward-Prowse – West Ham United
After West Ham sold Declan Rice,  uncertainty circled the Hammers, with many wondering how they would cope without their captain. Ward-Prowse has been a fantastic signing so far, having added a goal to his two assists against Chelsea last week.

James Maddison – Tottenham Hotspur
Maddison has Spurs fans forgetting about Harry Kane with his performances this season. The midfielder scored his first Premier League goal for the club in their 2-0 win over Bournemouth.

Forwards
Lyle Foster – Burnley
South African forward Foster scored his first Premier League goal against Aston Villa. Foster’s finish in the 47th minute was a perfect showcase of his strength and skill. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a fruitful campaign.

Raheem Sterling – Chelsea
Sterling has put the struggles of last season behind him. Sterling looks back to his best and was the Blues’ best player in their win over Luton town. Sterling’s brace was the perfect reward for his overall performance.

Darwin Nunez – Liverpool
Nunez’s performance against Newcastle was perfect. Coming on with 15 minutes to play and with 10-men, few could have predicted the Uruguayan to have such an impact. He took both his finishes extremely well and showed the composure of a superstar.
