Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Dominic Isaacs believes Bafana Bafana deserved to beat Nigeria, following their performance in the African Cup of Nations Group E opener.
Bafana Bafana got their 2019 Afcon qualifiers off to a great start after they claimed a 2-0 victory over the Super Eagles of Nigeria at Uyo’s Godwill Okpabio Stadium on Saturday.
Isaacs heaped praise on Itumeleng Khune, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Erick Mathoho, following their performance for the national team during their win over the Super Eagles.
“Khune showed his experience in goal, doing a fine job whenever he was required to come into action. He commanded his area very well,” Isaacs told the Kaizer Chiefs website.
“Rama was excellent, very solid defensively while making threatening runs forward as well. Mphahlele’s cross for Tokelo Rantie’s opening goal was class.
“Tower, meanwhile, formed a formidable combination at the heart of defence with Thulani Hlatshwayo. Mathoho played very well.”
The former Amakhosi defender believes that the national team deserved the win after the team executed coach Stuart Baxter’s game plan.
“To be honest, I felt confident before the match that we could win. Stuart Baxter has now been coaching in South Africa for quite a while and knows all the players inside out,” he added.
“Of course, Nigeria had a relatively young and inexperienced squad, but Bafana’s overall performance was good, they were tactically very sound and deserved the win.”
Bafana Bafana will now play host to Zambia when the two sides clash in an international friendly match at the Moruleng Stadium on Tuesday.
Kick-off has been set for 19:00.
