Banyana Banyana were crowned COSAFA Women’s Championship after defeating neighbors, Zimbabwe, 2-1 in the final of the tournament.
South Africa got off to a bright start, but it was the Zimbabwe who had the first effort, but Marjory Nyaumwe’s header went wide of the mark.
Thembi Kgatlana proved a nuisance for the Warriors defence with her pace and trickery, but she was let down by the lack of service by her teammates.
Banyana should have opened the scoring in the 35th minute, but the Zimbabwean shot-stopper made two good saves from Kgatlana and Bambanani Mbane.
Desiree Ellis’ side were rewarded for their efforts when they broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time Leandra Smeda’s defence-splitting pass found Kgatlana who made no mistake from close range.
Zimbabwe emerged with more of an attacking intent in the second stanza, but were let down by some poor decision-making in the final third.
They were rewarded for their efforts when Makore notched up her tenth goal of the campaign when she headed home in the 73rd minute.
With the scores equal, it was everything to play for, but South Africa would have the last laugh as Leandra Smeda headed home a dramatic winner in stoppage time to ensure Banyana clinch the trophy.
