With two games remaining in the DStv Premiership, Cape Town City will be eager to book their spot in next year’s Caf Champions League by attempting to cement a second-place finish on the log at Royal AM’s expense.
The race for the opportunity to secure a spot in the Caf club competition for next season will go down to the wire with a number of teams still vying for a place in the final two rounds of the DStv Premiership this season.
Mamelodi Sundowns have already secured top spot in the league after they claimed their fifth successive title following their goalless draw with City on 27 April.
However, the race for second and third place is still up for grabs, with City and Royal AM battling it out for the remaining spots in the Caf competition.
Cape Town City (2nd) – 48 points
The Citizens will enter their final two fixtures in the league sitting in second place on the table with 48 points following their 2-0 victory over TS Galaxy at the DHL Stadium on Saturday with Darwin González and Mduduzi Mdatsene’s goals leading the team to victory.
In their last two games of the campaign, Eric Tinkler’s men will welcome AmaZulu to the DHL Stadium on Saturday before ending their campaign with a Western Cape derby against Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium on 21 May.
Royal AM (3rd) – 45 points
Royal AM have three games left to play after their weekend clash was postponed due to Orland Pirates’ participation in the Caf Confederation Cup semi-finals.
In their last outing, Thwihli Thwahla failed to make the most of their chances after they conceded a narrow 1-0 defeat by Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium, with Friday Samu scoring the decisive goal.
Royal AM, who currently occupies third place on the table with 45 points, are set to face Golden Arrows at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday before hosting Mamelodi Sundowns at the Chatsworth Stadium on 21 May, with their match against Orland Pirates yet to be confirmed.
Kaizer Chiefs (4th) – 43 points
With two games left to play in the league, Kaizer Chiefs are fourth on the table with 43 points after they held champions Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw at the FNB Stadium this past weekend.
Amakhosi will now gear up for their remaining games of the campaign as they first take on Sekhukhune United at Ellis Park on Saturday, before finishing the season with a game against Swallows FC at the FNB Stadium on 21 May.
Stellenbosch FC (5th) – 41 points
Stellies will enter their final two fixtures in fifth place with 41 points after they were forced to share the spoils with Maritzburg United at the Danie Craven Stadium over the weekend, as Judas Mosemaedi cancelled out Bulelani Ndengane’s 61st minute opener.
Stellenbosch are now set to gear up for two tough final fixtures as they travel to Loftus Versfeld Stadium to face Mamelodi Sundowns before welcoming Western Cape rivals Cape Town City to the Danie Craven Stadium on the final day of the campaign.
Orlando Pirates (6th) – 40 points
Despite sitting in sixth place on 40 points, Orlando Pirates are still within a chance of securing a spot in next year’s Caf competition, especially after claiming a commanding 2-0 win over Al Ahli Tripoli in the Caf Confederation Cup semi-final first leg on Sunday.
The Buccaneers’ fate will be put on hold after their games against Maritzburg United and SuperSport United were postponed due to their participation in the Confed Cup.
