A Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal side were denied victory in their Confederations Cup opening tie against Mexico, courtesy of a last-gasp equaliser by Hector Moreno on Sunday night.
The European champions took the lead in the 34th minute when Ronaldo showed great skill to outwit the resilient Mexican defence, before teeing up Ricardo Quaresma for the easiest of finishes. The South American outfit drew level three minutes before half-time when the country’s top-scorer, Javier Hernandez, headed home from close range.
Southampton defender Cedric Soares thought he grabbed the lead in the 86th minute after a defensive error by the Mexican defence, however Moreno rose highest to head home a corner with virtually the last play of the game.
