France emerged from Euro 2024 group stages to the quarter-finals unbeaten, with two wins and two matches drawn in four games.
The French, led by captain Kylian Mbappe, narrowly defeated Belgium in the round of 16 after Kolo Muani’s deflected effort off Belgian defender Vertonghen found the back of the net in the dying minutes of the game, saving France from extra time and advancing them to the quarter-finals, where they will face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
France and Portugal will play for a semi-final place against either tournament hosts Germany or Spain. Both teams will be crossing paths for a third consecutive Euro Championship, after Portugal ended France’s hopes of winning the tournament in 2016 by beating them 1-0 in the final as hosts in their own backyard. Les Bleus and Selecao also met in the group stages of Euro 2021, sharing the spoils (2-2) following Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema both scoring braces.
