Orlando Pirates have announced the signing of midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni from Chippa United on a three-year deal.
Following a disappointing season, which saw the Soweto giants endure their worst-ever finish in the PSL Era, the Mayfair based-outfit have bolstered their squad with the arrival of Sangweni.
The 28-year becomes the second Sangweni to join Pirates, following his elder brother Siyabonga Sangweni’s successful five-year stint with the club.
Pirates beat off competition from Absa Premiership champions Bidvest Wits to secure the player’s services. Sangweni revealed his delight upon joining the club and highlighted that he’d like to help the team reclaim their former glory.
“I am very happy to have joined the club,” he told the club’s official website.
“I look forward to making a positive contribution to the team and help the team to bounce back to where we all know it belongs.
“I would like to thank the chairman, the staff and the supporters of Chippa United for all they have done for me, I will be forever grateful,” he concluded.
Sangweni is expected to compete with the likes of Issa Sarr, Abbubaker Mobara, Gladwin Shitolo, Oupa Manyisa and Mpho Makola for a spot in coach Kjell Jonevret’s starting line-up.
