Former Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane has opened up about his departure, revealing it was the right time for him to leave the Egyptian giants.
The Egyptian giants confirmed on Monday, 13 June that they have parted ways with Mosimane after he was nearly two years in charge of the club.
The South African mentor joined the Red Eagles in a shock move back in 2020 after he parted ways with Mamelodi Sundowns, enjoying a highly successful stint with the club at domestic, continental and international levels.
Mosimane guided Ahly to six trophies in his 21-month stint at the club, including two Caf Champions League titles, two Caf Super Cup trophies, the Egyptian Premier League title and the Egyptian Cup as well as two consecutive Fifa Club World Cup bronze medals.
The former Sundowns coach leaves the Egyptian giants, having won 65 matches, drawn 22 and only conceded 10 defeats since he took over in 2020, leaving former assistant coach Samy Komsan in charge on an interim basis.
Mosimane has since revealed that everyone at Ahly was shocked about his decision to leave the club, but the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor felt like it was the right time to move on.
“I’m happy to take a break. I’m happy to wake up at 11am and I’m happy that I’m not accountable to anybody at this point in time,” Mosimane said while speaking on Kaya959.
“I’ll get back to coaching when I feel like I want to go back.
“Sometimes you have to take a step back. Big coaches like Pep Guardiola have done that. Carlo Ancelotti has done that. Zinedine Zidane has done that. He won three Champions League titles but he’s not coaching now.
“It was a difficult decision to make. I left voluntarily. It was a shock to everyone at the club but I just felt it was the time to leave. I renewed my contract last year and I thought I would stay longer but every good thing comes to an end.”
