African Stars Ready to Shine in FA Cup

Some of Africa’s best are ready to step up in the FA Cup quarter-finals, with their contributions set to be decisive, writes DYLAN JOHNSON.

The 2024-25 FA Cup campaign has been the tournament of the underdog, with seven of the last eight remaining teams fighting for silverware for the first time in decades, and some for the first time in their history.

As we head into the quarter-finals this weekend, African players are set to be at the forefront of their teams’ hopes. Here are the stars to watch.

Antoine Semenyo – Bournemouth
Bournemouth’s Ghanaian star Antoine Semenyo has taken his game to another level this season, helping drive the Cherries to one of their best campaigns in recent memory under manager Andoni Iraola. Semenyo’s relentless energy pressing up the pitch will be key as Bournemouth look to put Manchester City’s defence under pressure.

His ability to create opportunities for himself and lethal attacking teammates like Justin Kluivert will be crucial. City have been vulnerable on the counter-attack this season, and Semenyo is particularly threatening in that area. His telepathic relationship with Hungarian full-back Milos Kerkez on the left flank has already yielded results, and with a goal-a-game record in this season’s competition, it’s a trend that looks set to continue.

Calvin Bassey – Fulham
Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey has been immense at the back for Fulham this season. His strength in duels, both on the ground and in the air, combined with his composure under pressure, makes him a key player for the Cottagers as they face Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals.

The 25-year-old’s aggressive defensive style and ability to progress the ball forward will be vital in this crucial match. Bassey’s presence in the heart of Fulham’s defence could be the difference as they look to keep Palace at bay and advance to the semi-finals.

Ismaila Sarr – Crystal Palace
Senegalese speedster Ismaila Sarr is Crystal Palace’s greatest attacking threat alongside Eberechi Eze, especially in the absence of Jean-Philippe Mateta. The 27-year-old’s pace and directness make him a nightmare for any defender, and he is capable of unsettling even the most organised backlines.

Whether on the counter-attack or with a dangerous delivery into the box, Sarr’s attacking contribution will be pivotal to Palace’s strategy against Fulham. His explosive pace will be crucial in getting Palace on the front foot in what promises to be a tight contest.

Omar Marmoush – Manchester City
Omar Marmoush has been a revelation since joining Manchester City from Eintracht Frankfurt in the January transfer window for €75 million. The FA Cup is Pep Guardiola’s and Marmoush’s last chance of silverware in 2024-25, and the Egyptian international will be eager to leave his mark in his debut season in England.

Marmoush’s speed, composure, creativity, and versatility along the front line make him almost impossible to defend. With his quality finishing and ability to play across multiple attacking positions, he could prove to be one of the most dangerous attackers left in the competition.

Ola Aina – Nottingham Forest
The most improved full-back in the Premier League this season, Nigerian defender Ola Aina has been key to Nottingham Forest’s surprising campaign. Aina is one of the best one-on-one defenders in the league, but his contributions go beyond defending. He plays a major role in Forest’s high-speed attacks, providing width from the right flank and delivering dangerous crosses into the box.

His relentless energy will be crucial as Forest take on Brighton in their quarter-final clash. Aina’s ability to provide defensive cover while supporting the attack will make him a key player in Forest’s hunt for silverware.
