Alex Iwobi has flourished under Marco Silva at Fulham, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable midfielders, writes DYLAN JOHNSON.
Since moving to Fulham in 2023, after a mixed spell at Everton, Iwobi has developed into a key player, a level many didn’t expect him to reach after leaving Arsenal in 2019.
The 28-year-old came through Arsenal’s academy, spending over 15 years at the club before joining Everton for €30 million. He played over 100 games for the Toffees, but due to their financial struggles moved to Fulham. Now, 18 months later, Iwobi is thriving and showing his best form.
Fulham are currently eighth in the Premier League and pushing for their best-ever finish. They are aiming to match or beat their seventh-place finish from the 2008-09 season. With 45 points, they are just four points behind fourth-place Chelsea, three behind fifth-place Manchester City, and two behind Newcastle and Brighton, who hold the European spots.
Iwobi has played a big role in Fulham’s success. He has already beaten his best-ever Premier League goal tally, contributing 11 goals and assists this season, with nine games still to go. He has also made almost 60 appearances since his arrival, showing how much Marco Silva trusts him. His performances have been backed up by strong numbers, including an 85% pass accuracy, two key passes per game, and four assists. His work rate on both sides of the ball has also been impressive, averaging 1.5 tackles and one interception per game.
For Nigeria, Iwobi has played in different positions, earning 80 caps so far. His versatility has always been useful, but at Fulham, he has found his best role in midfield. He is now more confident in possession, drives forward well, and creates chances for teammates. His passing has also improved, with better vision and decision-making compared to his early days at Arsenal.
At Arsenal, Iwobi was an exciting young player but struggled with consistency. Over time, he has learned to make better decisions and has grown into a more complete midfielder. Fulham have given him the trust and freedom to perform, and he is making the most of it.
Iwobi and Nigeria have already qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which starts in December. After losing the 2023 AFCON final to Ivory Coast, the Super Eagles will be looking to go one step further. Iwobi will be joined by Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, and Victor Boniface, all hoping to bring Nigeria their first AFCON title since 2013.
Iwobi has gone from being an Arsenal academy player to an Everton squad member and now a key player for Fulham, proving his quality at the highest level. His journey is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and the right environment. With Fulham pushing for European football and Nigeria eyeing AFCON glory, Iwobi is delivering the best performances of his career when it matters most.
