Nottingham Forest fullback Ola Aina has quietly become one of the standout defenders in the Premier League this season—and with Trent Alexander-Arnold set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, the 27-year-old Nigerian could be an ideal, low-cost replacement for Liverpool.

Aina’s contract with Forest expires at the end of the season, and after a campaign that’s seen him impress on both sides of the defence, he’s shown he belongs at a higher level. While he doesn’t offer the same creative passing range as Alexander-Arnold, Aina’s strength lies in his consistency, athleticism, and positional intelligence—qualities Liverpool will need in a restructured back line.

Trent has been a generational talent for the Reds, redefining the fullback role with his vision and ability to dictate games from deep. But with his departure imminent, Liverpool may look to evolve their approach rather than replicate it. Aina’s performances this season—particularly against Liverpool, where he shut down attacks in a 1-0 win at Anfield and a draw at the City Ground—suggest he could thrive under the demands of a high-pressing side like Liverpool.

With Arne Slot looking to rebuild his side after a Premier League-winning debut campaign, Aina is not a direct replacement for Trent but could add Premier League experience alongside Conor Bradley. Signing him on a free transfer would also allow Liverpool to save funds for bigger priorities in the squad, such as a striker and a left-back to provide competition for veteran Andy Robertson.

Aina’s form, versatility, and availability make him a smart addition as Liverpool reshape their squad for another title push.
