Bloemfontein Celtic came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Kaizer Chiefs, as Steve Komphela came up against his former club in their Absa Premiership encounter at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The sides drew both encounters last season, but Celtic would have been full of confidence heading into the fixture after a perfect start to the season.

Phunya Sele Sele have won all three of their opening games under new coach Komphela and were yet to concede a goal.

Komphela’s former club Chiefs, however, have got off to a shaky start under new boss Giovanni Solinas. Despite impressing in the MTN8, the Soweto giants have struggled in the Absa Premiership, failing to win any of their opening matches, drawing three and losing one.

Chiefs started the game well and after threatening early on, they eventually broke the deadlock on 33 minutes. Siphelele Ntshangase’s pass found the run of Khama Biliiat, the Zimbabwean took a touch and calmly slotted the ball past Patrick Tingyemb in the Chiefs goal.

Both sides were creating chances, but neither could find a goal in the remainder of the half due to a combination of poor finishing and good defending.

Amakhosi started the second half as they did the first, on the front foot.

Chiefs doubled their lead with 64 minutes gone as Khotso Malope produced a lovely dink finish as Solinas’ men looked on course to pick up their first win of the season.

Komphela and Celtic, however, had other ideas as they pulled a goal back with 76 minutes played. Menzi Masuku was slipped through on goal and he made no mistake in beating Bruce Bvuma in the Chiefs goal.

Phunya Sele Sele then completed the turnaround three minutes later. Ndumiso Mabena forced Daniel Cardoso into giving the ball away, before he struck a ferocious strike into the back of the net to level the scores.

Chiefs then pushed forward in search of a winner while Celtic looked to threaten on the counter-attack.

Neither side, however, could find the winner as the game ended 2-2.

Chiefs now lurk in the basement of the Absa Premiership log and remain winless in the league, while Celtic enjoy a lofty position on the table as they remain unbeaten.
