Kaizer Chiefs have announced the promotion of young goalkeeper Karabo Molefe to the club’s first team.
The decision to promote the 16-year-old keeper comes just a couple of weeks since the successful promotion of 21-year-old left back Happy Mashiane.
Molefe will now join a packed goalkeeping department at Naturena with coach Ernst Middendorp now having five goalkeepers to choose from, and that’s not counting the injured Itumeleng Khune.
Since Khune’s injury at the turn of the year the Amakhosi have struggled at the back with his deputy Virgil Vries making a number of costly errors.
This convinced the Chiefs management to go out and secure the services of Nigerian international Daniel Akpeyi on deadline day, who joined Bruce Bvuma and Brylon Petersen and of course Vries as options for Middendorp.
Speaking on the promotion football manager Bobby Motaung said, ‘Apart from Mashiane, we are excited to announce the promotion of another goalkeeper Karabo Molefe. Karabo is only 16-years-old but has done well in the development team.
‘With his height and talent, we believe he will be one to watch for the future as he also has an advantage of learning from all the experienced top goalkeepers we have in the team.
‘We have a fairly young side and we’ve added more young talent, which will inject more young energy in the squad.’
Molefe joins the likes of Siyabonga Ngezana, Emmanuel Letlotlo (on loan to Baroka), Bruce Bvuma, Brylon Petersen, Wiseman Meyiwa (retired), Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Yusuf Bunting (on loan to Highlands Park), Khotso Malope and Happy Mashiane as the Chiefs graduates to make the step up since 2016/17.
