Cape Town City and Maritzburg United were forced to share the spoils after playing out to a 1-1 draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
The Team of Choice came out with intent in the opening exchanges of the match.
The first chance of the game fell to Maritzburg in the 14th minute, but Sage Stephens came to his side’s rescue to deny Lebohang Maboe at close range.
The home side broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Andrea Fileccia slotted the ball past Stephens to make it 1-0.
The Citizens had a chance of their own after Roland Putsche unleashed a strike at goal, but the midfielder was denied by Maritzburg shot-stopper Richard Ofori.
Maritzburg went into the half time interval with a 1-0 lead over City.
The home side started the second half off the same way they did the first and saw more possession on the ball.
Mosoud Juma should’ve levelled matters in the 67th minute after unleashing a strike at goal, but Ofori did well to save his effort from close range.
Craig Maritn almost equalised 15 minutes before time, but he failed to steer his header towards the target.
City eventually levelled matter in stoppage time when Juma’s strike found the top corner after latching on to a loose ball in the area.
Neither side was able to find the winning goal in the closing stages as the match ended 1-1 at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
