Ertugral’s City down Chiefs in first match in charge

Cape Town City claimed the only victory of the Betway Premiership weekend, defeating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the DHL Cape Town Stadium on Sunday evening.

Betway Premiership standings

Darwin Gonzalez’s early second-half goal sealed the win for City in their first match under returning coach Muhsin Ertugral. The result lifted City to 11th place on the log and extended their unbeaten streak against Chiefs to eight league matches (W6 D2). Chiefs, meanwhile, remain in seventh place and continue to grapple with inconsistency after suffering their fourth league defeat of the season.

City controlled possession and showed attacking intent in the first half but struggled to create clear chances, while Chiefs threatened on the counter but failed to capitalize in the final third. The deadlock was broken in the 51st minute when Gonzalez completed a swift counter-attack, sprinting from his own half to slot the ball past Bruce Bvuma.

Despite late substitutions and a strong free kick from Mfundo Vilakazi that forced a fine save from Darren Keet, Chiefs couldn’t find an equalizer. City held on for their fourth league win and will next face Orlando Pirates, while Chiefs take on Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday, January 8.
