Kaizer Chiefs dropped down to fourth place in the DStv Premiership standings after suffering a 1-0 defeat to SuperSport United at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Soweto giants got off to a bright start and had two chances to break the deadlock but Siyabonga Ngezana and Reeve Frosler were unable to find the back of the net.

Samir Nurkovic should have handed Chiefs the lead in the 20th minute but after clashing heads with SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, the referee ruled in favour of the goalkeeper.

Williams was called into action again in the 23rd minute when he collected Bernard Parker’s ball into the box to prevent any Chiefs players from attacking the ball.

Khama Billiat came close to handing Chiefs the lead in the 40t minute after he beat two SuperSport defenders but the Amakhosi attacker fired his effort over the crossbar.

Amakhosi had the ball in the back of the net in the 44th minute but Nurkovic’s effort was ruled out for offside as the game went into the half time break level at goalless.

The Soweto giants started the second half off at a good pace with Parker forcing a save out of Williams, who denied him a goalscoring opportunity.

Chiefs made their first substitution in the 62nd minute when they made a straight swop to bring on Leonardo Castro to replace Nurkovic in the attack.

But it was SuperSport who took the lead in the 68th minute when Thamsanqa Gabuza fired the ball home from close range after latching on to a pass from Lungu to make it 1-0.

Williams was called into action in the 75th minute when he did well to deny Frosler’s shot at goal as Chiefs looked to level matters late in the game.

However, SuperSport held on to their narrow lead over Chiefs until the final whistle to claim the win and all three points away from home.
