Philani Zulu says he was shocked and felt partially responsible when Kaizer Chiefs fans ripped up the Moses Mabhida Stadium following the Nedbank Cup semi-final loss to Free State Stars.
Chiefs supporters caused damage to the cost of R2.6-million in a display of hooliganism following their loss to eventual Nedbank Cup champions, which subsequently brought an end to Steve Komphela’s reign at the Soweto giants.

In addition to Komphela’s resignation, Chiefs also made the bold move of cancelling the club’s annual awards ceremony – a first-ever in the club’s existence, following another season without silverware.

Speaking on the events which transpired at the Moses Mabhida Stadium two months ago, the former Maritzburg United defender says he was taken aback by the scenes he bared witness to in Durban two months ago.

“It was my first time I witnessed something like that and more so it happened in a game that I was part of it,’ he told kickoff.
“It was something that didn’t go down well with me because I felt like I was a failure.

“Things like that are very unusual and also the way it happened … it’s unacceptable and scary at the same time.
“Things like that don’t normally happen at big clubs. I won’t say much but it was very scary.
“Even at the change room no one said a thing and everyone was guilty, thinking whatever they were thinking. We were just so shocked,” he concluded.
