Bloemfontein Celtic coach Steve Komphela believes his side have done well in the first of all the season, despite their recent poor form, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
Celtic went into the Christmas break after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Cape Town at Cape Town Stadium over the weekend to end the year on a sour note.
They are currently placed seventh in the league standings with 21 points from 15 matches played so far this season.
Komphela admits that he is satisfied with the clubs overall performance so far this season and will look to better their performance in the second half of the campaign.
‘A win in the last game against City could have given a different picture – am I going to forget the possibilities and only drown my thinking in the current sorrow? It shouldn’t be,’ Komphela said.
‘I think they’ve done fairly well, even though I know we could have done much, much better.
‘The matches we gave away … you can’t imagine losing three matches in a row when we’ve had a hell of a great run. In the first group of five games, we collected 13 points, which was massive.
‘In the second group, we collected seven. In both those groups we collected 20, which means in 10 matches, we collected two points per game … after 15 matches, if you have 30, your [points] ratio is [on par] for the championship.
‘So we were doing well, and it’s only this last group of five games where I think we did terribly, but with the points as well, and looking at the log, a win against City would have taken us to 24 points, and position three.’
The former Free State Stars coach insists that he will take a positive outlook on things heading into the new year, despite conceding four straight defeats.
‘Looking at the reality of the current picture, it is what it is,’ he added.
‘But we have to go forward and think like Australians, and look for something you can hold onto, to drag them forward, and think, “It’s not as bad as it is”. Let’s go back and work again – it is possible. That’s what you have to think.’
Bloemfontein Celtic will restart their Absa Premiership campaign in 2019 on 4 January when they travel to Chippa United.
