Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung admitted that he is hoping for a long journey with Ernst Middendorp after appointing the German on a two-and-a-half-year contract, writes DEAN WORKMAN.

Middendorp was revealed as Giovanni Solinas’ replacement on Friday evening just hours after it was announced that the Italian and his assistant Patrick Mabedi were leaving Naturena after having their contracts terminated.

Bar the recent sacking of Solinas, Chiefs have given their coaches time in the past. This was evident in their decisions to stick with former coach Steve Komphela through three trophy-less campaign.

The Glamour Boys are, however, in a precarious position and despite the pressure on Middendorp to hit the ground running, Motaung is eyeing a lengthy association with the German coach, who returns to Naturena after a spell in charge from 2005-2007.

‘The contract is two-and-a-half-years, obviously with an option to extend.

‘Looking at the past relationship we have had with the coach, we are looking forward to another long long journey with them.

‘Now he understands South Africa and understands South African mentality. He is South African by the way. A lot of people have asked me about a work permit, but he [Middendorp] has an ID.

‘So, it is a two-and-a-half-year contract but long term we are looking at extending long term,’ concluded the Chiefs football manager.

Middendorp will take charge of his first game back at Chiefs on Tuesday evening as the Glamour Boys take on SuperSport United in the Absa Premiership.
