A Simon Murray brace inspired Bidvest Wits to a 2-0 victory over Cape Town City at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
The victory sees the Clever Boys move to the top of the PSL standings, while the Citizens drop down to 12th place.
The Clever Boys got off to a great start and took the lead after six minutes when they were awarded a penalty. Murray stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 1-0.
The Citizens pushed for the equalising goal, with Teko Modise playing a commanding role in the middle of the park for the home side.
City should have levelled matters after Matthew Rusike unleashed an effort at goal, but Wits keeper Darren Keet made a great save to deny the City striker just before the break.
However, Wits doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time as Murray grabbed his brace.
The Citizens came out with more intent in the second half with the likes of Riyad Norodien, Craig Martin and Rusike pressuring Wits early on.
Wits coach Gavin Hunt opted to make a change in the 62nd minute when he introduced Elias Pelembe in place of Haashim Domingo.
At the other end, City coach Benni McCarthy made a change of his own when he brought on Ayanda Patosi in the 69th minute.
Patosi nearly made an instant impact, but the City wing was unable to direct his free kick towards goal.
The home side pressed forward in the closing stages but Wits managed to hold on to their two-goal lead until the final whistle to claim three points which see them leapfrog Orlando Pirates into first place.
