The home side eventually levelled matters on the stroke of half time after Tshepang Moremi fired his volley past Mpontshane to find the back of the net as the game went into the break locked at 1-1.
Pirates made their first substitution after the restart as Ntsako Makhubela came on to replace Bandile Shandu.
Makaringe should have handed Pirates the lead in the 52nd minute after Paseka Mako kept the ball in play to tee up the attacker, who fired his shot inches wide of goal.
The Buccaneers had another chance to take the lead in the 65th minute when Makringe surged forward before unleashing a strike at goal, which was subsequently pushed wayward.
The Buccaneers were nearly caught out in the 75th minute from a free-kick but De Jong guided his header just over the crossbar.
The Sea Robbers made their second substitution four minutes later as Makgaka made way for Thembinkosi Lorch, who makes his first appearance for the season.
Both sides pushed forward in the closing stages of the game as they went in search of a winning goal but neither side were able to find the back of the net as they shared the spoils in Durban.
