Slump continues for former giants Kaizer Chiefs

Record domestic title winners Kaizer Chiefs remained in the bottom half of the Betway Premiership table after a 2-0 loss at Polokwane City on Sunday.

Chiefs lie ninth, 10 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, after eight rounds of the richest African national league.

Polokwane, a club assembled for a fraction of the cost of Chiefs, rose to third after the win in scorching mid-afternoon heat in the northern city.

But despite only one win in six matches in all competitions, Chiefs’ Tunisian coach Noureddine Nabi told reporters that “the team is heading in the right direction”.

Nabi was hired after successful stints with Tanzanian and Moroccan clubs as Chiefs seek a first trophy since winning the 2015 Premiership.

Formed in 1970, Johannesburg-based Chiefs won South African 53 titles and also the 2001 African Cup Winners Cup before the slump began.

South Africa winger Oswin Appollis scored for Polokwane after 17 minutes with a low shot across goalkeeper Brandon Peterson from a tight angle.

When Peterson, deputising for injured Rwandan shot-stopper Fiacre Ntwari, failed to hold a shot in the final minute of regular time, Mokibelo Ramabu slammed the loose ball into the net.
