Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a shocking 3-0 home loss against Stellenbosch United, while Kaizer Chiefs edged past Sekhukhune United in Saturday’s DStv Premiership action.
Mamelodi Sundowns 0-3 Stellenbosch
After making wholesale changes from the side who played against Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, Sundowns were behind early on as Ashley Du Preez got onto Mogamad De Goede ball over the top before poking the ball past the outrushing Ricardo Goss and into the net to giv the visitors a 6-minute lead.
Down looked for a way back into the game but Stellenbosch keeper Sage Stevens was having a blinder as he denied the champions on several occasions before Steve Barker’s men managed to double their lead just before the break.
A poor clearance from Goss was quickly picked up by Jayden Adams who produced a stunning chip to leave the back peddling Downs keeper sprawling. 2-0 Stellenbosch heading into the break.
The Brazilians may have dominated the ball in the second half but they were again hit on the counter in the 57th minute as again Du Preez was slipped in behind and showed too much pace before applying the finish.
A disappointing loss for the Champions who won’t reach their goal of 70 points.
Sekhukhune United 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs
Chiefs were looking to build on last weekend’s draw against Sundowns but were out the services of a number of first team stars.
With a possible second place finish still up for grabs for Chiefs, the encounter got off to a cagey start with neither side wanting to give anything away.
Amakhosi, however, managed to snatch the lead with 38 minutes gone as a misplaced header clearance from a Billiat free kick was met by Ramahlwe Mphahlele who couldn’t miss from close range with his header.
The visitors did what they could to get back into the game, but Arthur Zwane had his Chiefs side well drilled and disciplined as they managed to hold on for an important 3 points.
