Sundowns planning FNB stadium takeover

Themba Zwane of Mamelodi Sundowns celebrates goal with teammates during the CAF Champions League 21/22 match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Hilal
Published on May 7, 2022

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi along with the club’s media team have embarked on a #ChampionsCalabashTakeover as they have called on their fans to turn out in their droves for Sunday’s clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

The Brazilians, who have already wrapped up their 5th consecutive league title, travel to face rivals Chiefs who are still fighting for a second-place finish.

Ahead of the big clash the team’s media team has gone on the offensive by starting a #ChampionsCalabashTakeover at the ground that come became their second home for their Caf Champions League campaign.

Then speaking in his pre-match press conference, Mngqithi also urge the fans to turn up as the teams ‘fight to see who the boss’ of the stadium is.

“We are going to give this game the respect it requires,” Mngqithi said. “Which is why we also feel it’s very important to urge our supporters to come in numbers.

“Because this appears as maybe it’s a match where we are also fighting for the calabash to see who is the boss in that space [at FNB Stadium].

“And I think that’s very important for our supporters to understand that this game has got those connotations now that we have to go their mentality to take over the calabash.

“We have done very well in that space in the Champions League but now we’re meeting the real owners of the stadium.

“It’s a game that becomes important in that space, and the league is not important at this stage.

“But what is important is to make sure that the name of Mamelodi Sundowns is engraved in that stadium, and everybody understands that we also take it as our stadium.”
