Cape Town City captain Robyn Johannes credits his teammates for sticking to their game plan following their 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday.
The Citizens ended Pitso Mosimane’s sides seven-game unbeaten run courtesy of a first half strike by Nana Akosah-Bempah.
Johannes says his side can enjoy their Chrismas after climbing up to second in the PSL standings, trailing Sundowns by four points, despite having played one game more than the current log leaders.
“Obviously playing Sundowns isn’t easy. They are the best team in the country, but we had a game plan and we stuck to it perfectly,” Johannes told SuperSport TV after the game.
“We knew if we stopped [Hlompho] Kekana and [Tiyani] Mabunda from playing then half of the job is done.
“Credit to the boys. Fantastic effort! You have to be on your toes for 90 minutes.
“Sundowns’ midfield is unbelievable with [Themba] Zwane, Kekana, Mabunda and Oupa [Manyisa]. They shift the team from side to side but so do we. We stuck to our plan, we were patient enough and like I said, credit to the boys. Amazing three points.
“We did a double over Sundowns last season. Great three points here tonight.
“Sundowns is the club that put me on the map so I will forever be grateful for them and for what they did for me but I have a job to do, but a fantastic three points.
“Now we can enjoy our Christmas.”
