City suffer poor return after breaking the bank

Manchester City have the worst value for player spending in the Premier League.

Premier League clubs have long been the dominant financial force in world football, but it is rare that every team’s business is ranked in terms of player value for money.

Chelsea have spent more than £1 billion since their change of ownership and have failed to see any real progress on the field. Manchester United have spent more than £1.5 billion since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and have relatively little to show for it.

It is the teams in the Premier League that do not have bottomless pits of cash that need to work smarter to find players that will grow and develop, players that will be value for money.

The football experts at Ticketgum have scoured the wage data for each Premier League club and compared it with their performance in the Premier League 2023–24 season to determine which players are contributing the most and least value to their teams.

Luton Town surprisingly have the best value for money players in the Premier League, with star defender and former Manchester United player Teden Mengi one of the best value players in the Premier League. For context on Luton’s spending power, the Hatter’s  yearly wage budget for their whole squad is £19,240 000, which is marginally less than Premier League top goal scorer Erling Haaland’s annual salary of £19,500 000.

The worst-ranking club, unsurprisingly, is Manchester City. It is no secret that the blue side of Manchester has been a financial powerhouse for over a decade, with the club breaking multiple transfer records under countless different managers. Their best value player is academy graduate Oscar Bobb, who looks to be another example of City’s successful development programme. John Stones has been ranked as their worst-value player, with his contributions severely limited by injury problems.
