Legendary striker Benni McCarthy has opened up on his time as a coach at Manchester United, speaking on Erik ten Hag and Cristiano Ronaldo’s relationship.
McCarthy left the Red Devils at the end of the 23/24 season after the end of his contract, despite being well liked amongst the players in the squad.
The all time Bafana Bafana top scorer believes Erik ten Hag is one of the most intelligent coaches in the world tactically, but feels he falls short when it comes to passion and building relationships with the players in his squad.

A key example he used was the breakdown of his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo who left the club halfway through the 22/23 campaign.
McCarthy believes Ronaldo is one of the hardest working and elite athletes he has ever seen and did not agree with how ten Hag worked with the Portuguese all time top scorer tactially on the field and behind the scenes.
He also credited stars Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, citing their unrelenting work ethic in training and claiming that results would have improved had players in the squad followed suit and not held back.
This is telling!!
When a coach of two years at united is opening saying players didn’t give everything in training and limited progress, then there is a problem! #MUFC
