If you were to look at every Premier League team’s squad, there are players of the highest quality, especially in the goalkeeping department, with some of the best goalkeepers in world football all across the division. This quality comes at a premium, where there are world-class players, there is more often than not, world-class wages attract the best of the best.
This raises the question, how much does it cost for every save your team’s goalkeeper has made this season?
Here are the top five most expensive goalkeepers per save in the Premier League.
David De Gea – Manchester United
The most expensive goalkeeper in the Premier League is Manchester United’s, David De Gea. The Spaniard has the highest weekly wage for a goalkeeper in the league, earning 375 thousand pounds per week. De Gea is managing 2.7 saves per game so far this season. The Spaniard has the highest cost per save in the Premier League coming in at 140 625 pounds per save.
Ederson – Manchester City
On the blue side of Manchester, Ederson is the second most expensive goalkeeper per save in the league. Ederson earns 10o thousand pounds a week, this is nearly 4 times less than David De Gea. It costs Manchester City 65 625 pounds per save Ederson makes. Less than half the cost of a De Gea save, Ederson is average 1.5 saves per match.
Emiliano Martinez – Aston Villa
A surprising member of this list, Emiliano Martinez has been one of Aston Villa’s best players since joining from Arsenal. The World Cup winner is earning 120 thousand pounds per week, slightly higher than Ederson. Martinez costs Aston Villa 45 600 pounds per save. Martinez is averaging 2.6 saves per game, one more per game than Ederson and 0.1 less than De Gea.
Alisson – Liverpool
Alisson, who has been a standout performer for Liverpool this season, is managing to make crucial save after crucial save as the 10 players in front of him crumble. Alisson earns 150 thousand pounds per week and is managing to average 3.4 saves per game. This equates to 44 188 pounds per save.
Kepa Arizzabalaga – Chelsea
Kepa became the most expensive goalkeeper in world football after making a move to Stamford Bridge from Athletic Bilbao in 2018, luckily for Chelsea, he has made the number-one spot his own this season, despite falling out of favour to Edouard Mendy. Kepa is earning 150 thousand pounds per week, the same as Alisson. Kepa is averaging 3.5 saves per game, just edging Alisson by 0.1 saves per game. This costs Chelsea 43 333 pounds per save.
To put these figures into perspective, Brentford’s David Raya is comfortably the best value per save goalkeeper in the league. The Spaniard is earning 25 thousand pounds per week, nearly 100 thousand pounds less per week than Emiliano Martinez, and 24 times lower than compatriot David De Gea’s cost per save ratio. Raya costs Brentford 5769 pounds per save while he averages 4.3 saves per game.
Are the Premier League’s most expensive goalkeepers justifying their value? Or should Premier League clubs dig deeper into their costs per save?
