Mabuza tops Portugal’s right-back rankings

Former KZN Academy defender Mhleli Mabuza has been named the best right-back in Portugal’s Campeonato de Portugal (fourth tier) following an outstanding season with Louletano Desportos Clube.

According to FARPost, the 24-year-old has been in exceptional form, contributing nine assists this season.

His performances have reportedly caught the attention of several PSL clubs, including one from Gauteng and two from his home province of KwaZulu-Natal, as the July transfer window approaches.

Mabuza’s European journey began in 2018 after he impressed during a trial with KZN Academy and earned a move to Portugal. Speaking to FARPost, he recalled, “I was playing for Manzini United in the SAB League when I got the chance to trial at KZN Academy. After being selected for a European tour, I played friendlies in Portugal, where clubs showed interest.”

Despite initial challenges adapting to a new style of play, language, and culture, he quickly settled and has since flourished.

The talented full-back highlighted two major career milestones in Portugal: winning promotion to the third division with USC Paredes in the 2021/22 season and his recent individual accolade. “Winning the league with USC and earning promotion was my best moment,” he said. “This season has also been special—being named the best right-back in the league with 8 to 9 assists was a rewarding achievement.”

With growing interest from South African clubs, Mabuza hasn’t ruled out a potential return to the PSL. While he remains focused on his current campaign, the possibility of a homecoming could materialise in the upcoming transfer window.
