Michael Edwards rejoins Liverpool to lead post-Klopp era

Liverpool have agreed a deal with former sporting director Michael Edwards that will see the Englishman take a leading role in the post-Jurgen Klopp era.

Edwards left Liverpool in June 2022 after a successful spell as sporting director playing a major role in staff and player recruitment.  Edwards was responsible for the signings of Alisson Becker, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah during his time at the club. His final signing for the club before his departure was center back Ibrahima Konate.

He was also influential in the hiring process of Jurgen Klopp, advising against the likes of Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti and Newcastle’s Eddie Howe who were both available in 2015.

Edwards first task in charge will be the recruitment of a new sporting director, with the short-term contract of Jorg Schmadtke expiring at the end of the current season.  Richard Hughes, the current sporting director at AFC Bournemouth will reportedly join the Reds as Schmadtke’s replacement at the end of the season.

This will allow Liverpool to turn their full attention to sourcing Jurgen Klopp’s successor with Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso all topping their shortlist.
