Premier League team of the week – Gameweek 23

Gameweek 23 took the title race to another level.  The Gunners got a massive three points over Liverpool at the Emirates while Manchester City kept the pace with a dominant victory over Brentford.

Take a look at SoccerMag’s best 11 performers from Gameweek 23 of the Premier League.
We used buildlineup.com to put our team on paper, but our selections are explained below.
Goalkeeper:
Mark Flekken
Mark Flekken was the standout performer for the Bee’s in their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City.  Despite the scoreline, Flekken was immense in goal and made a record nine saves in the first half alone.

Defenders:
Alex Moreno – Aston Villa
Spanish fullback Alex Moreno was back to his best this weekend after a poor performance last round.  His contributions offensively helped Villa overrun Sheffield and cruise to victory.

Jarrad Branthwaite – Eveton
One of the shining lights of Everton’s season, young defender Jarrad Branthwaite looks to be a serious player.  Branthwaite clutched up in extra-time to rescue an important point for the toffee’s against Spurs.

Lewis Dunk – Brighton
Brighton’s lighthouse Lewis Dunk has been one of the best central defenders in the Premier League for the past couple seasons.  His ability with the ball and off set-pieces was on show this round with a great performance against Crystal Palace.  Dunk completed 138 passes with 98% accuracy.  Ridiculous numbers for a central defender.

Ben White – Arsenal
Arsenal got one of the biggest wins of their season at the Emirates this weekend and Ben White was one of the stars of their performance.  His contributions to the defense in stopping Luis Diaz as well as his work-rate to help in attack will have made Mikel Arteta a happy man.

Midfielders:
Joao Palhinha – Fulham
The destroyer in the middle of the park for Fulham, Joao Palhinha was a monster this weekend.  His desire and determination to dominate the midfield was rewarded with an important goal.

Ross Barkley – Luton Town
The Ross Barkley renaissance has been a joy to watch this season.  The past two rounds have been the perfect reminder of how talented the former Chelsea and Everton midfielder is.  His performances in the middle for Luton are a huge contributor to their position above the relegation zone.

Matheus Cunha – Wolves
Wolve’s were on fire in gameweek 23, demolishing Chelsea at the Bridge.  Brazilian Matheus Cunha scored three of the best and made the Blues pay.

Phil Foden – Manchester City
Manchester City kept within touching distance of the top of the table with an emphatic win over Brentford.  Phil Foden scored a sensational hattrick to put the pressure on the Reds.

Forwards:
Richarlison – Spurs
Richarlison’s dry spell is confidently over.  Spurs may not have been able to secure three points but  the Brazilian did his part by bagging a brace in the first half.

Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa
Ollie Watins is one of the best forwards in the Premier League.  He has been approaching this conversation but this season has cemented his spot at the top.  Watkins got a goal and two assists in Villa’s 5-0 win over Sheffield.
