Premier League team of the week – Gameweek 8

Gameweek 8 of the Premier League saw Manchester United secure a dramatic three points at Old Trafford while The Gunners ended a 12 game losing streak against Manchester City with a victory at the Emirates.

Take a look at SoccerMag’s best 11 performers from Gameweek 8 of the Premier League.
We used buildlineup.com to put our team onto paper, but our selections are explained below.
Goalkeeper
Jordan Pickford – Everton
The England number one has had a rough start to the season, with Everton’s struggles no secret to the rest of the Premier League.  Pickford was integral to the Toffee’s second win of the campaign, playing his part both in goal and with the ball at his feet.  Pickford managed 15 successful long balls, a figure most midfielders would be proud of.

Defenders:
Lewis Dunk – Brighton
Brighton’s captain had a solid game against Liverpool.  His passing was superb apart from a misjudged effort into midfield that resulted in a goal.  Dunk made up for his mistake with a late equalizer in the second half.

Mathias Jensen – Brentford
Brentford were seconds away from a result at Old Trafford and were unfortunate to leave with nothing.  Mathias Jensen had an impressive performance.  The Dane put the Bees ahead inside the first half an hour, finishing with his left-foot into the center of the goal.  Jensen now has three goals so far this season.

Micky Van de Ven – Tottenham
Van de Ven has hit the ground running for Spurs since his 50-million-pound move from Wolfsburg a few months ago.  The Dutchman has been dominant and alert defensively but it was his offensive contributions that helped his side this week.  Van de Ven scored his first Premier League goal to secure three points for Spurs against Luton Town.

Pau Torres – Aston Villa
Pau Torres’s arrival from Villareal was a real statement from the Aston Villa hierarchy.  With Tyrone Mings out with a long-term injury, Torres has had to step up and acclimatize on the job.  The Spaniard scored his first goal for Villa, an equalizer at the Molineux to secure a draw against Wolves.

Midfielders:
Scott McTominay – Manchester United
Scott McTominay appeared to be on his way out of Old Trafford near the end of the transfer window, with multiple clubs keen on securing his signature.  Erik Ten Hag will be happy he stayed with the Scot scoring an injury time brace to rescue three points against Brentford.

Jack Harrison – Everton
Harrison’s arrival from Leeds United went under the radar, but the 26-year-old has settled in well at Goodison Park.  The midfielder had a superb performance against Bournemouth, scoring a left-footed screamer and  assisting Abdoulaye Doucoure for Everton’s third.

Cole Palmer – Chelsea
One of the more surprising moves of the transfer window, Cole Palmer and Chelsea look to have  finally turned a corner.  Palmer  scored his first Premier League goal for Chelsea to top off a great performance in the Blues 4-1 win over Burnley.

Forwards:
Gabriel Martinelli – Arsenal
Brazilian star Gabriel Martinelli scored arguably the biggest goal of his career this weekend.  Arsenal had lost 12 games in a row against Manchester City and needed to make a statement if they wanted to compete for the title this season.  Martinelli stepped up when The Gunners needed him.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool
The Egyptian King continues to carry The Reds.  Mo Salah scored an important brace to keep Liverpool in the title race at Brighton, finishing off an excellent team move before converting a penalty.

Alexander Isak – Newcastle United
Swedish striker Alexander Isak is growing with every game he plays.  Isak scored a quickfire brace against West Ham United and was inches from making it a hatrick if not for the woodwork.  Isak is now on six goals in eight appearances.
