Transfer watch – Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur and England captain Harry Kane is the centre of another transfer saga as he enters the final year of his contract in North London.

Kane is attracting interest  across Europe with Bayern Munich officially submitting a bid worth around 70-million Euros.

Thomas Tuchel is said to be a real admirer of the striker and has him as priority target to lead their rebuild.

Daniel Levy is a notoriously tough negotiator and is unlikely to accept their initial bid, holding out for a fee closer to the 100-million Euro mark.

New Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou may be able to convince their all-time top scorer to extend his contract, but this is looking unlikely as Kane is reportedly keen on a move to Munich.

Bayern Munich have failed to strengthen their attack since the departure of Robert Lewandowski, with Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and new arrival Sadio Mane, unable to fill the void left by the Polish striker.

Harry Kane would be an ideal candidate to lead the line, with his proven goalscoring ability matching Lewandowski’s.

Another attribute Kane would bring to Bayern is his creative ability. In the past few seasons, his overall game has developed from an out-and-out goal scorer to having greater influence in the attacking build-up.

Kane has also dropped deeper and played long-balls to his wingers running in behind their opposition defence.

This has worked incredibly well with his Tottenham teammate Son Heung-min.  Sane or Mane could replicate this movement perfectly.

Manchester United have had heavy interest in Harry Kane over the past 12-18 months, but have been preoccupied by the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea. Now that the Mount deal has been concluded, Erik Ten-Hag will address their need for a striker.

The Red Devils have struggled with the absence of an out-and-out striker since Romelu Lukaku’s exit in 2019.

They have been heavily reliant on Marcus Rashford for goals and Bruno Fernandes for creativity this season, with Kane’s potential arrival guaranteed to ease the burden placed upon their two most valuable players.

Harry Kane has been in this position before, when Manchester City offered Spurs more than 100-million pounds two years ago, one season prior to signing Erling Haaland.

Despite putting in a transfer request, Kane ended up staying, but this time round it seems like if he stays it will be until the end of his career.

Kane could run his contract down and leave on a free transfer next season but there are no guarantees there will be the same interest from the big clubs.

The big teams that need a striker need one now and they will not be patient in addressing that issue especially with other options such as Victor Osimhen, Randal Kolo Muani and Rasmus Holjund on the market.

They may not be as complete and ready as Kane but are all in their early twenties, meaning they will be able to head a long-term project as opposed to the 30-year-old who has at most five years left of his playing career.
